Capital Development Authority (CDA) unveiled Islamabad’s first digital car parking project at G-8 Markaz. The launch, attended by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa and Member Technology Nauman Khalid, includes a ten-day free parking period to raise public awareness.
The new digital system will also be installed at Centaurs Mall and in F-7, with operations starting September 25. It will offer payment options via credit/debit cards, QR codes, scratch cards, and cash. Future expansions include the Blue Area parking plaza and other commercial zones.
Revenue from the digital system will be reinvested in market improvements. A joint venture of Pakistani and Chinese firms has secured a five-year contract, with CDA retaining 75% of the revenue.
However, the project faces challenges, including past issues with parking fee collection and allegations of corruption within the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). An audit in 2022 uncovered significant irregularities, leading to a reported loss of Rs. 82.34 million.
The new system is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in Islamabad’s parking infrastructure.
