Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) Deputy Station Manager in Birmingham, Iqbal Javed Bajwa, has reportedly resigned after his educational credentials were found to be fake. According to a PIA spokesperson, Bajwa, who is allegedly the brother of former army chief General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa, was asked to step down following the discovery of a forged educational certificate.
The issue came to light when PIA’s higher management issued a show cause notice to Bajwa on July 13, 2024, through the airline’s finance manager in Birmingham. The notice was based on allegations that Bajwa had submitted a fake Intermediate certificate as part of his employment documentation.
The investigation revealed that the Intermediate certificate submitted by Bajwa could not be verified by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Lahore. The board confirmed that the roll number 25703, which was supposed to belong to Bajwa, did not match any records of a passed Intermediate examination under his name. As a result, the PIA management was notified in writing by the board that the certificate was indeed forged.
Bajwa was given a seven-day deadline to provide proof of the authenticity of his Intermediate degree, as required under PIA’s Employees Disciplinary Policy 2019. Failure to do so would have led to termination. After the certificate was confirmed to be fake, Bajwa was asked to resign, which he reportedly did.
This development occurred after PIA’s directive in August 2023, requiring all employees to submit verified educational documents. This directive was part of the national airline’s efforts to ensure the authenticity of qualifications among its workforce.
Iqbal Javed Bajwa had been associated with PIA for several decades. He initially joined the airline’s Rawalpindi office in 1977 and later transferred to the United Kingdom, where he became a regular employee in the late 1980s. Despite his long tenure with PIA, the discovery of the fake certificate has brought his career to an unceremonious end.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of PIA to enforce stricter standards and hold employees accountable for maintaining accurate and verifiable records.
