Google is enhancing passkey adoption by allowing users to save credentials directly to Chrome on desktops. Previously, passkeys could only be stored via the Google Password Manager on Android, requiring users to scan QR codes for login on laptops.
Now, Google Password Manager supports passkey storage on macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS (currently in beta), with iOS support expected soon. The login process on desktops simplifies to scanning a fingerprint or entering a device passcode.
When creating a new passkey, users must enter a six-digit recovery PIN for accessing saved passkeys across devices. This PIN adds an extra security layer, ensuring that passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and protected from unauthorized access.
