Starting Wednesday, Americans can renew their passports online as the US Department of State expands its beta program nationwide, following a two-month trial. The Department has increased staffing, hired specialists, and upgraded its website to meet the growing demand for services like passport renewals and travel visas.
Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma announced the launch during a travel conference in New York, stating, “Tomorrow, online passport renewal will be available nationwide for the first time.”
Around 200,000 people participated in the beta phase, and the Department expects nearly 50% of future renewals to be done online. However, applicants must meet certain criteria, including being in the U.S. at the time of renewal. Passports expired for over five years are not eligible for online renewal.
