Significant relief in electricity prices is anticipated as the government has made progress in negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) regarding tariff reductions, according to sources.
On Sunday, Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari informed the Senate Standing Committee on Power that the Power Sector Task Force has completed its assessment of both IPPs and state-owned power plants.
“The committee has received all the necessary information regarding the IPPs, and we will soon share positive updates with the public,” Leghari stated.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the Power Sector Task Force, led by the Minister of Power Division, has reviewed the tariffs of over 100 power plants. It has been agreed that several IPPs will be phased out, and consumers will receive relief across all tariff categories.
Additionally, the government plans to eliminate unnecessary taxes, with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) already having submitted its recommendations. A decision has also been made to lower the special tariff rate for the industrial sector.
