Punjab Health Department Issues Alert for Pink Eye Outbreak

As temperatures soar and humidity levels rise in Punjab, health authorities are sounding the alarm over a surge in conjunctivitis cases. Commonly referred to as pink eye, this highly contagious eye infection is spreading rapidly throughout the province, reported Gizmo Pakistan.

Conjunctivitis is characterized by redness, burning, itching, watery or thick discharge, swelling, and sensitivity to light in the affected eye. The condition is often caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies. While most cases resolve on their own, untreated conjunctivitis can lead to more serious complications.

Factors Contributing to the Outbreak:

  • Hot and Humid Weather: The warm, moist conditions provide an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and viruses that cause conjunctivitis.
  • Poor Hygiene: Inadequate handwashing practices can contribute to the spread of the infection.
  • Crowded Places: Schools, workplaces, and public transportation can facilitate the transmission of conjunctivitis germs.
  • Sharing Personal Items: Using contaminated towels, handkerchiefs, or eye makeup can increase the risk of infection.

Preventive Measures:

  • Frequent Handwashing: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching your face, eyes, or nose.
  • Avoid Touching Your Eyes: Refrain from rubbing or touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
  • Use Tissues: If you need to sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.
  • Clean Surfaces: Regularly disinfect surfaces and objects that are frequently touched.
  • Avoid Sharing Personal Items: Do not share towels, handkerchiefs, or eye makeup with others.
  • Wear Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from excessive sunlight, dust, and pollution.
  • Seek Medical Attention: If you experience persistent conjunctivitis symptoms or notice a change in vision, consult an ophthalmologist.

The Department of Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education is urging the public to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. By following these guidelines, individuals can help protect themselves and their communities from this contagious eye infection.
