Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a significant technological advancement in traffic management through her social media channels. The provincial government is now deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to issue electronic challans (e-challans) for traffic violations. This initiative aims to modernize governance and enhance road safety by leveraging cutting-edge technology.
AI-Based Traffic Violation Detection
The new AI system will monitor and issue e-challans for the following traffic violations:

Violation of traffic signals |
Triple Riding |
Driving on the wrong side of the road |
Tinted/Covered glass |
Violation of line/lane/zebra crossing |
Plying a motor vehicle where prohibited |
One wheeling |

Riding a motorcycle without a helmet |
Non-fasting of seatbelt |

Lahore Traffic Police Initiatives
In conjunction with the AI rollout, Lahore Traffic Police have established special teams to enforce the new rules and apprehend violators as part of a comprehensive crackdown in the city.
CTO’s Statement
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar highlighted that the AI system is also being utilized to monitor traffic wardens, promoting discipline and ensuring safe travel. “For the first time in South Asia, an AI system is being used to issue e-challans for a comprehensive list of 19 traffic violations,” stated the CTO. This initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to digitalize traffic management, including e-challans and e-vehicle registrations, to make processes more convenient for vehicle owners and reduce the need for physical documentation and police center visits.
