Japan’s Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer of the viral game “Palworld,” accusing it of patent infringement. The game, humorously dubbed “Pokemon with guns,” features weapon-wielding characters and creatures resembling those from Nintendo’s popular “Pokemon” franchise.
Nintendo’s lawsuit, submitted to the Tokyo District Court, seeks an injunction and damages for alleged infringement of multiple patent rights, although the exact amount sought has not been disclosed.
Nintendo emphasized its commitment to protecting its intellectual property, stating, “We will take necessary actions against any infringement.”
“Palworld,” which has sold over five million copies in three days, is currently available in early access for $29.99 on Steam. Its description invites players to “fight, farm, build, and work alongside mysterious creatures called ‘Pals’” in a multiplayer, open-world survival game.
Initial reviews have been positive, though many users noted the striking similarities to Pokemon. One developer remarked, “Most people thought this game was going to be a meme, but it’s actually detailed and compelling.”
Nintendo continues to guard its franchise, which has been a global sensation since its debut in 1996.
