New iPhones, New Chips: What Apple’s Event Could Bring on Sept. 9

Apple’s upcoming iPhone, powered by the A18 chip, will feature the latest V9 chip design from SoftBank-owned Arm, according to a report by the Financial Times on Saturday. The new iPhone is expected to be introduced at Apple’s annual fall event, scheduled for September 9 at its Cupertino, California headquarters. This event will likely showcase a lineup of new iPhones and updates to various devices and apps.

In September last year, Apple secured a long-term agreement with Arm, extending their partnership beyond 2040. This deal marks a significant boost for Arm, particularly in the realm of chip technology. Arm revealed in July that its V9 chip design accounts for 50% of the revenue in the smartphone market. Arm licenses its intellectual property, including the architecture behind most of the world’s smartphones, to companies like Apple and others.

Apple integrates Arm’s technology to create custom chips for its devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The collaboration between the two companies dates back to the early 1990s. Apple was one of the founding partners of Arm in 1990, prior to the release of its Newton handheld computer in 1993, which utilized an Arm-based processor chip. Though the Newton device was unsuccessful, Arm’s low-power consumption technology became a dominant force in mobile phone chips, helping to extend battery life and enhance performance.

In a separate move, Apple is reportedly expanding its presence in India’s streaming market through a new partnership with Airtel.
