Islamabad, September 13, 2024 — The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken significant steps to combat criminal activities in the Katcha areas of Sindh, including Shikarpur and Ghotki districts, by blocking 465 SIM cards associated with dacoits, according to a report by state-run APP on Thursday.
Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima provided details in the Senate about this crackdown. She stated that the PTA’s action came on the directives of key security agencies including the Ministry of Interior, the Directorate General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and the Signals Directorate of General Headquarters.
The Minister highlighted that this recent action is part of a broader effort to curb criminal activities facilitated through telecommunications. Last year, the PTA had blocked approximately 5,294 mobile numbers, 4,507 IMEI numbers, and 113 CNICs. In addition, warning notices were issued to 19,730 numbers suspected of involvement in fraudulent communications.
Fatima elaborated that mobile services had also been suspended in certain areas of Rahim Yar Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan due to security concerns. This measure aims to prevent the misuse of mobile networks for illicit purposes and ensure public safety.
In her statement, Fatima emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing cyber security. She noted that grey traffic, which refers to unregistered international calls, had been reduced by up to 90 percent due to the government’s interventions. Grey traffic often involves calls that bypass legal telecom channels, leading to revenue losses and potential security risks.
The PTA’s actions are part of a larger strategy to fortify Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure against misuse and ensure that mobile networks are not exploited by criminal elements. By blocking SIM cards and issuing blacklists, the authority aims to dismantle the communication channels used by organized crime groups operating in the region.
Furthermore, the government is working on additional measures to strengthen cyber security and safeguard the telecommunications sector from exploitation. The continued efforts to block fraudulent and criminal communications are expected to enhance overall security and public trust in telecom services.
As the PTA and other relevant authorities advance their initiatives, the focus remains on creating a safer and more secure communication environment for all citizens, while addressing the challenges posed by criminal elements and grey traffic.
