K-Electric (KE) has requested a significant increase in electricity tariffs, seeking an additional Rs3.09 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for July 2024 due to fuel charges adjustments. This request was discussed during a public hearing held by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Thursday.
The public hearing was convened to evaluate KE’s request and address concerns related to the justification of fuel charges adjustments. Nepra’s scrutiny includes examining whether KE adhered to the economic merit order in its power supply decisions and in purchasing electricity from external sources.
KE’s request for a Rs3.09 per kWh increase has sparked considerable debate among business leaders and industrialists.
In response to queries about the gas supply agreement between Sui Southern Gas Company and KE, company officials stated that discussions are ongoing. KE assured that it is making timely payments for the gas consumed in power generation while awaiting resolution on the gas supply issues.
