The picturesque hills of Murree are set to experience a major change with the Punjab government’s new initiative: the Pindi-Murree Glass Train Project. Also known as the Murree Rail Link, this venture aims to connect Rawalpindi with Bhurban in Murree and is a key component of the broader Murree Development Plan.
Eighteen departments are working together to develop the Project Concept One (PC-1) for this innovative rail service. This team, led by the Punjab Transport Minister, includes notable figures such as the Rawalpindi Commissioner, the deputy commissioners of Rawalpindi and Murree, and other key officials.
The proposed 65-kilometer rail line will traverse the scenic Margalla Hills and Barakahu, offering passengers stunning views of the natural landscape. The National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) is conducting a feasibility study for the project.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz formally approved the Murree Rail Link in June 2024. Following her approval, the Punjab Government’s Transport Department has been tasked with preparing the feasibility study and estimating project costs.
This glass train service is expected to significantly enhance tourism in the region. The train will travel from Rawalpindi Railway Station to Murree Bhurban, covering 65 kilometers. The final project cost and timeline will be determined once the feasibility study is completed.
Drone footage of the proposed route has been collected for planning purposes. While the train will pass through Margalla and Barakahu, the decision on additional stations will be based on the PC-1 findings.
The working group will present a detailed cost report to ensure the project is completed efficiently and within budget.
