In a move to enhance transparency and prevent fraudulent activities, the Sindh government has unveiled a new policy requiring biometric verification for vehicle registration and transfers. Excise Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that the policy would be implemented in phases to ensure a smoother transition.
Policy Implementation Phases:
- Phase 1 (Effective July 1, 2024): Biometric verification becomes mandatory for the registration of new vehicles.
- Phase 2 (Starting November 1, 2024): Biometric verification will be required for individuals purchasing vehicles.
- Phase 3: Both buyers and sellers will undergo biometric verification during the vehicle transfer process.
Minister Memon highlighted that this initiative is a significant step towards greater transparency within the Excise Department, stating that “this is just the beginning.” The new verification process is expected to prevent illegal transfers and fraudulent registrations, ensuring a more secure and efficient system.
To facilitate the process, citizens can complete biometric verification at NADRA e-facilitation centers or their local excise offices. This modernization effort is part of Minister Memon’s broader strategy to reform the excise and taxation department, which also includes a second phase of issuing premium number plates.
The upcoming auction of 50 premium vehicle numbers aims to raise funds for flood relief efforts, further linking this initiative to broader social causes.
With the introduction of biometric verification, the Sindh government seeks to establish a more reliable and transparent vehicle registration and transfer system, ultimately benefiting citizens and reducing fraud.
