This week, several users reported that their M4 iPad Pro devices were bricked after installing the iPadOS 18 update, released on Monday. Following this issue, Apple has paused the update for affected models and is currently working on a fix.
An internal memo obtained by MacRumors confirms that a bug is preventing some M4 iPad Pro models from turning on after the iPadOS 18 update. Apple acknowledged that a “small number” of users are impacted and advised technicians to attempt a force reset before considering replacements. Details on the timeline for a public fix are yet to be announced, and those who haven’t updated are advised to remain on iPadOS 17.
Other iPad models appear unaffected, and the update remains available for them. Users experiencing issues reported that their devices stopped working during the update, with one stating that their iPad turned off mid-process and is now unresponsive, even to restoration attempts.
“I took it to the Apple Store, and they confirmed it’s completely bricked. They said it needs to be sent to engineers before I can get a replacement, despite having AppleCare,” recounted one affected user.
iPadOS 18 introduces a customizable Home Screen, Math Notes, Smart Script handwriting support, live audio transcription, the Calculator app, and Game Mode for the first time on iPad.
