Nintendo Ends Repairs for New Nintendo 3DS Due to Parts Shortage

Nintendo has announced it will no longer offer repair services for the New Nintendo 3DS. While it’s typical for companies to phase out support for hardware after a decade, the closure of repair services for this particular model is due to a depletion of available parts. This information was shared via a translated social media post from Nintendo’s Japanese support team.

Impending End of Repairs for Other 3DS Models

In addition to the New Nintendo 3DS, repair services for the Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS LL (known as the XL model in the US) are also nearing an end. Nintendo will cease repairs for these models once their inventory of replacement parts is exhausted.

The Legacy of the 3DS Line

Nintendo halted the production of the entire 3DS line in 2020. The 3DS series had a significant impact during its time, serving as Nintendo’s flagship handheld console. By the end of 2016, the New 3DS and New 3DS XL had sold approximately 9.94 million units globally. Overall, the entire 3DS family of consoles achieved total sales of 75.94 million units by 2020.

Current Repair Options for US Customers

For now, US customers can still access Nintendo’s repair services for late-model 3DS XL units. However, New 3DS owners may need to explore other options if their devices require repairs. The third-party repair platform iFixit offers a range of replacement parts and repair guides for the New Nintendo 3DS through its online catalog. Given the age of the hardware, it is advisable to handle these devices with extra care to extend their lifespan.

As support for the New Nintendo 3DS and other models winds down, enthusiasts and collectors may find it increasingly challenging to maintain these beloved consoles. Just as with the 3DS eShop, which also faced closure, the availability of repair services and parts will become increasingly limited over time.
