Punjab Governor to Interview VC Candidates After CM’s Selection

Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has decided to personally interview candidates for vice chancellor positions at government universities, following a summary from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. This marks the first time both the chief minister and governor will interview VC candidates reported Express Tribune.

The Governor’s Secretariat has summoned the top candidates to meet with the governor on Tuesday. The interviews come after Chief Minister Sharif previously interviewed and shortlisted candidates for 11 major public universities.

The move has sparked speculation about potential reservations from the governor, as academic circles await his final approval. The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) has urged for prompt appointments, citing ongoing issues due to the vacant VC positions.

Seven candidates have been invited for interviews at the Governor House, with concerns raised about the unusual second round of interviews. Despite the 18th Amendment granting the chief minister the authority to conduct these interviews, the governor’s involvement is seen as a unique step.

The governor is expected to finalize the appointments following these interviews. Currently, 25 VC positions across Punjab’s public universities remain unfilled. FAPUASA President Dr. Amjad Magsi expressed hope for a swift resolution to the vacancies, emphasizing the need for permanent leadership to address ongoing challenges at the universities.
