Strict Helmet Laws Enforced on Lahore’s Major Roads: What You Need to Know

Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, is currently taking significant steps to enhance road safety for travelers. From easing regulations for drivers with expired licenses to utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor traffic violations, the Punjab government is employing every resource to ensure that both motorcyclists and motorists comply with traffic laws.

Recently, certain roads in Lahore have been designated as helmet-mandatory zones. According to a traffic police spokesperson, motorcyclists without helmets are prohibited from traveling on major roads like Jail Road, Mall Road, Ferozepur Road, Canal Roads, and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road. Additionally, areas in Cantt have been declared off-limits for helmetless riders.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ammara Athar has instructed strict action against those violating helmet laws. To enforce this, an AI system has been introduced to work in conjunction with manual enforcement. Reports indicate that the AI system detected 202,957 violations, while manual efforts resulted in 249,684 challans.

AI-Driven E-Challans

Recently, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced via social media that the Punjab government has started using AI to address traffic violations. In her post, she shared: “The Punjab government has implemented AI-powered e-challans, marking a major technological advancement to improve governance and ensure safety.”

CTO Ammara Athar mentioned that cameras are also being used to monitor traffic wardens, promoting discipline and ensuring safer travel through the use of modern technology. She emphasized, “For the first time in South Asia, AI is being employed to issue e-challans for 19 different traffic violations.”

In a push towards digitalization, the Punjab government has introduced various initiatives like e-challans and e-vehicle registrations, aiming to streamline traffic management.
